History Unfolds is an interactive map of all of human history. You travel through it in time — drag the timeline back and forth and watch borders shift, civilisations rise and fall, and the events that shaped them appear where they happened.
One rendering engine draws every era, from the Bronze Age to the twentieth century. A "preset" is simply a saved viewport — a starting point that remembers where you are looking, when, at what resolution, and which civilisations to highlight. Switching presets does not load a different map; it just moves you to a different place and time on the same continuous world.
We have made a significant effort to ensure that every event, ruler, and border is as accurate as possible. The underlying data comes from open datasets, hand-curated wherever those sources are thin or unreliable. Inevitably, though, some mistakes will have slipped through — if you spot one, please let us know and we will put it right.
You can explore by clicking. Click any civilisation to see its rulers, complete with portraits. Click any event for a summary, an image, and a short list of further-reading books. The aim is something you can get lost in — accurate enough to trust, and open enough to keep wandering through.
